Antique Palazzo on the main square, the very heart of the town life, with a beautiful cloistered entrance that reminds you of the middle ages. Everything here is smaller. The weddings are celebrated in Dante's Hall. No Thursday weddings since there is an outdoor market. Expensive rental fee, but very well worth the price! A favorite movie set, San Gimignano recently hosted “Tea with Mussolini”directed by Franco Zeffirelli. ”Brother sun, sister moon” was filmed here too.
San Gimignano is, after Siena, the most famous and romantic medieval hill town of Tuscany. Ringed by no less than three sets of walls, far from the horizon rise its 14 towers (what is left out of 72!). During the 1200’s wealthy patrician families vied with each other to build the tallest tower, attaching it to their palazzos. The purpose was both for defense and to display wealth and local power. They were the skyscrapers of the middle ages!
San Gimignano is named after a Bishop of Modena who died here in the 4th century. The town is one of the most perfectly preserved medieval gems in Italy and a pleasure to discover on foot.
The main piazza is beautifully paved in a herringbone pattern and surrounded by elegant medieval palaces and towers. Dominating the Piazza del Duomo is the 12th century Cathedral, also surrounded by palazzi and towers. The Museo Civico is the main museum, and inside are 14th and 15th century frescoes and paintings. The Sala di Dante, where weddings take place, is where the writer Dante Alighieri, father of the Italian literature and ambassador for Florence, delivered his speeches trying to bring the warring families of Guelphs and Ghibellines to cease their wars. From this hall you can access a tower offering incomparable views of all the hills and Tuscan countryside for miles and miles. Couples choosing this location for a civil wedding will find a wide choice of restaurants or villa hotels for a reception and many guest activities such as wine tours and more to participate in!
