Destination Weddings in Puglia
Puglia, in southern Italy, has known many rulers throughout its long history, and is a fascinating part of the country. Your wedding in Puglia is a chance to discover more of this diverse region.
The coastal capital, Bari, is the lively economic center of the region, and has been a key city since Norman times. The wide avenues and piazzas of the 19th century remain at its center, whilst Bari also includes an atmospheric kasbah-like quarter, a legacy of the Saracenic influence on the city. Many similar, smaller 'kasbahs' can be found throughout Puglia.
Another coastal city, Táranto, was legendary in Greek and Roman times, and relics from these eras can be seen in its museum. Táranto is now cleanly divided into a modern city center, an industrial district and an atmospheric old town, which is a pleasure to explore.
The lovely baroque city of Lecce is well worth visiting. Some Roman remains have been preserved here, and the architecture of the old town is beautiful.
South of the city of Lecce is the picturesque Salentine peninsula whose gentle hills, planted with carob, tobacco and prickly pear, give way to the rugged cliffs of the Adriatic coast. Ruined watch towers stand on top of many of the cliffs, which are cut into by rocky coves and mysterious caves. Many tiny villages dot the landscape.
Puglia is a geographically diverse region, with an extended coastline, unspoiled beaches, mountains and forests. Each ruling power has left its mark on the region. Norman cathedrals, Swabian castles and fortified Roman towns are all common sights in Puglia.
This region is a lovely part of Italy, highly recommended for a destination wedding.
